Your Starbucks Card & You: How Not to Become *That* Customer
1. Always reload your card before placing your order. If a floater or the person on bar asks for your order, go ahead and give it to them, but take care of your reload first before giving the person on register your order. Especially if you have a large order. Yes, there is a button on the register screen that allows the barista to save the order, but it does kind of throw them off guard. Also people sometimes do this and then go on to commit the following:
2. Don’t ask for multiple transactions on one card when it’s busy. Accruing points is all fine and dandy, but if it’s busy, and you’re insisting on ringing up each thing individually on your card, you’re not only holding up the barista’s time, you’re holding up the customers behind you.
3. Everything you get for free with a registered car still needs to be told to the person on register and rung up accordingly. This is how we take care of inventory. If you don’t tell us what you want in your drink, and we don’t ring it up, we’re not going to know how much we really need to order and thus are likely to run out. Not to mention: that costs us money. So if you’re getting a flavored latte or a refill and know you’re going to get that syrup/refill for free with your registered card, tell the person on register, anyway. It helps! On that note…
4. Refills. It’s a great deal, getting refills for free, but don’t abuse this. If you’re a robin working someplace that gets hit hard by extreme couponers, this is kind of the same deal. The refill policy officially is that you can only get one as long as you’ve stayed in the store, but obviously quite a few stores are lax on that. But people do take advantage of it. I will work shifts that start in the morning and end in the evening and see people walk up to the register asking for a refill, even though I’ve never seen them at all that day. I’ve had people go to the register to reload their card, then come to the bar and ask for a refill. Even if you’re entitled to a refill according to the rules, you still need to be rung up for it. And if you’re thinking “oh well I have a registered card so I can just ask for a refill and not pay even though I haven’t had this coffee/tea today!” Don’t.
